Custom Blocks
Available blocks: Article List | Simple List | Accordion | Video Transcript | Advanced Blocks
These are examples of custom blocks we created in-house to tailor to our website needs. More custom blocks will be available in future BirdPress releases. They can be found under the “BirdPress” category in the block list.
Article List
A list of posts or pages. Options allow for different display styles as well as determining whether or not to display thumbnails, excerpts, dates, attributions, etc.
See Article List Block page for details on all options available in the block sidebar.
Grid View
The grid view, or card display, is more visually impactful with larger images.
List View Example
List example is best for article lists that display excerpts.
On the Antarctic Peninsula, Scientists Witness a Penguin RevolutionExample Article from Living Bird Winter 2016
Coffee Made in the Shade Can Be More Profitable, Thanks to BirdsExample article from Living Bird Autumn 2019
The Quest To Film And Photograph Every Species Of Bird-Of-ParadiseThis article features an embedded youtube video banner.
Simple List
A simple list block is an easy way to display content that is similar to an article list, but does not require a page or post for the article item. An example could be a staff list where the staff does not have individual profiles.
By default, simple lists create a grid-style article list with an image, header and paragraph. A list display can be selected in the block’s toolbar. It is preferred to only use very basic blocks within the simple list. New list items can be added by pressing the [+] inside the block. One to five columns per row can be selected.
Images should have the same proportions – we recommend a 4:3 ratio.

Content Carousel
Display content in a carousel format that is controlled by the user.

Slide One
Any block can be added to the content, but we suggest limiting it to text, images and columns.

Slide Two
Any block can be added to the content, but we suggest limiting it to text, images and columns.

Slide Three
Any block can be added to the content, but we suggest limiting it to text, images and columns.
Accordion (legacy)
**There is now a core Accordion block which we recommend you use instead**
Accordions shorten the length of a page to reduce scrolling. They give users more visibility of headers so they can easily browser and choose which content to view. Accordions are commonly used for Help and FAQ sections on websites.
Content can consist of images, lists, text and tables.
Transform to a Core Accordion Block
We recommend transforming existing custom accordion blocks to the new core accordion block. You can do this by:
- Select the block
- Click the accordion icon in the left side of the block toolbar
- Select Accordion from the menu of blocks

Video Transcript
Transcripts are the text versions of your videos. They are an alternative to watching a video or listening audio. A transcript should include what is spoken in the video and descriptions of actions or important information on-screen.

Transcript Styles
By default, the transcript block has a negative top margin that will bring is closer to the video. Classes can be added to use less or no negative margin under the Margins & Padding panel if there needs to be less space between the video and transcript.
- No negative margin adds the no-margin class
- Less negative margin adds the less-margin class
Advanced Custom Blocks
Some advanced custom blocks are also available. They are for special requests and should only be used after being trained on setting them up.
